Steamworld Dig 2

Description

Carrying on from its predecessor, SteamWorld Dig, SteamWorld Dig 2 puts players in control of Dorothy, a steam-driven robot searching for Rusty, the protagonist of the previous game who disappeared. Gameplay largely involves exploring a vast underground mine, coming up against enemy creatures while finding various resources as the player digs their way downwards. As the game progresses, Dorothy can gain abilities and weapons such as pressure bombs, a hookshot, and a pneumatic arm that can punch through rock.

Any resources found can be traded in for cash in the game's hub world, where the player can upgrade their health, weapons, and abilities. Each of the weapons have perks that can be activated by installing Upgrade Cogs found in secret areas. More blueprints for upgrades become available to the player by either increasing their level by killing enemies or completing quests, or by finding artifacts hidden in the mines.

Played through it this past weekend and had a lot of fun with it. Very pretty game and the mechanics work very well. I did not play SD1 so I do not know how this plays as a sequel, but the story is simple regardless. The game has an in game hint system that you can turn off so you can explore the world on your own, and it also has a few options you unlock along the way that can increase the difficulty for some benefit.

Amazing game. The first one hooked me and this is only better. You dig and get treasure so that you can sell it for money that’s used to get upgrades that lets you dig deeper for better treasure, etc etc.

Took a couple hours for me to get into it, but this game is fun and addictive. If you like relaxing and mashing buttons to dig and fight enemies this may be for you. I also really like the digging levels in super Mario 2 NES I think that kind of plays into it.
